OSHA’s Electronic Injury Reporting – Now Available
OSHA launched their Injury Tracking Application on August 1, 2017 to help employers who are affected by OSHA’s rule requiring electronic submission. This allows employers to electronically enter their required 2016 injury and illness data from Form 300A.
What does this mean?
- Users will be able to manually enter data into a web form.
- Users will be able to upload a CSV file to process single or multiple establishments at the same time.
- Users of automated recordkeeping systems will have the ability to transmit data electronically via an application programming interface (API).
The Improve Track of Workplace Injuries and Illnesses final rule went into effect January 1, 2017. The initial compliance deadline was July 1, but OSHA has proposed delaying that deadline until Dec. 1, so that affected entities have enough time to familiarize themselves with the electronic reporting system.
In 2017, all “covered establishments” must submit data from 2016 Form 300A. Next year, the rule requires establishments with at least 250 employees to submit information from 2017 Forms 300 (Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses), 300A (Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses), and 301 (Injury and Illness Incident Report). Those with 20 to 249 workers in specified industries are required to enter data from Form 300A.
The data submission process involves four steps:
- Creating an establishment
- Adding 300A summary data
- Submitting data to OSHA
- Reviewing the confirmation email.
How long will this process take?
For establishments with 20-249 employees that are required to report, OSHA estimates that it will take a typical employer about 10 minutes to create an account and another 10 minutes to enter the required information from Form 300A.
For establishments with 250 or more employees, OSHA estimates that it will take a typical employer about 10 minutes to create an account, 10 minutes to enter the required information from Form 300A, and 12 minutes to enter the required information for Forms 300 and 301.
